Dearne
Highgate Primary School introduced a token scheme at lunchtime
and each child receives team points for each "5 a day"
item eaten. The tuck shop was introduced in June 2005
selling only items of fruit, vegetables and fruit juice
at cost price. Volunteer mums come into school to
prepare the fruit ready for playtime. Once prepared
Y6 pupils have the task of taking the produce to the playground
and serving all KS2 pupils. The tuck shop has been
tied into the token system and children receive a teampoint
for each item eaten.
The
KS2 pupils have been divided into 5 team; each team named
after a fruit. The team points are added at the end
of each half term; the team with the most points are rewarded
with an afternoon of making fruit kebabs, fruit cocktails
and smoothies.
A
major breakthrough has been noted with the children.
In particular:-
One
girl in Y5 was bringing a packed lunch from home and used
to only eat jelly sweets, chocolate, crisps and drink coca
cola. Now she brings plastic containers of grapes,
pineapples and other fruits and often enjoys an apple at
playtime.
One
boy in Y6 would not eat fruit at lunchtime, even with the
promise of team points. However, now he eats 2-3 pieces
of fruit every day at playtime.
The whole school
community and Joanne Beard, the Learning Mentor, has worked
closely with Suzanne Storey, Dearne Community Development
Health worker, to make this project a success.
