IDEAS TO RAISE AWARENESS |

Presentations
to Governors and /or Parents
The Healthy School
Team can deliver presentations to parents and/or governors
if required. Presentations usually last 10 - 15 minutes
and give a brief overview of the Healthy School Scheme and
PSHCE. Most schools have found this useful in recruiting
a parent or a governor onto the task group.
Staff
Inset
The
Healthy School Team or the school's PSHCE coordinator can
deliver a staff inset (twilight) that will inform all staff
about the Healthy School Scheme, its benefits and how they
can become involved in their programme.
Health
Awareness Day
The
Barnsley Healthy School Team can support you in delivering
a "Health Awareness Day" that will raise the pupils' awareness
of the school's involvement in the scheme. The day could
consist of a series of "healthy" activities delivered through
different areas of the curriculum. Examples:-
- Literacy could have a PSHCE theme - perhaps focussing
on issues such as friendships, feelings and bullying.
- Facilities at lunch and breaktimes could provide healthier
food and drink options.
- Ideas to promote more physical activity could be put
on at lunch and break
- Each class could adopt one of the eight themes to
focus on for the day
- A special celebratory assembly could be held at the
end of the day to which parents could be invited.
Activities
on this day should be teacher led to ensure that they are
effective and that they follow a whole school approach.
Leaflets
Send
specially designed leaflets, available from the Barnsley
Healthy School Team, home to parents to inform them about
the scheme and to encourage them to join the task group
or become involved in some of the projects.
Newsletters
If
your school has a newsletter for pupils, staff or parents,
perhaps there could be an article on your school's involvement
in the Healthy School Scheme. There could be a regular slot
to keep everyone updated on the work that is being carried
out.
Displays
Is
there a notice board that could be used to display Healthy
School work / activities? This should be in a prominent
place where all the staff, pupils and visitors can see the
good work that is going on in the school as part of the
Healthy School Scheme.
School
Council
If
your school has a school council, ask if the Healthy School
Scheme can be a regular item on the agenda. This will help
the council to consult with any feedback to all pupils any
information about the Healthy School Activities and will
allow all the pupils to air their views.
