Setting
up a Health Education Project in Schools
It is recommended
that all pupils have the opportunity to participate in a
health education project at least once in their time at
school. The rationale for developing the project is simple;
skills gained in the classroom may be applied to real life
situations. Young people and their communities can benefit
in a number of ways:
- Benefits to young people
- Benefits to the school and community
- Young people will be able to practice the range of
skills learned in the school
- The sense of personal achievement and maturity can
lead to increased participation in other school activities
and a commitment to helping others
- Young people will have the opportunity to work with
others from different social groups
- The projects will help to cement links between the
school and the wider community through increased understanding
and partnership
- The project will provide the platform for young people
to build on existing skills and interests and to develop
new areas of learning
- The school - community liaison will enable a partnership
approach to common concerns and issues
- Working with others may enhance the young person's
self - esteem and sense of personal responsibility
The
aim of the project is to provide opportunities for young
people to develop a range of skills based on Key Skills
and personal and social skills. It will also give young
people the experience of working in the community and of
providing a service to other members of that community.
Finally, it will allow young people to participate in activities
that address issues shared by both the school and its wider
community.
