Project
Ideas
The range of activities
that may be carried out is broad and the following are some
possible areas that may be considered in the school setting.
- Plan fundraising activities - with a health focus
Many
charities and concerns benefit from fundraising by schools.
Activities can include some aspect of health such as physical
activity, healthy eating or recycling.
A
number of schools have looked at ways in which the school
can be made more environmentally friendly - from planting
daffodils to auditing the recycled waste provision.
The
internal environment is also important - can it be made
safer? more stimulating? supportive of learning?
- Change the climate of the school
This
is an excellent way for young people to explore the ethos
of the school. It has direct links to the focus area of
emotional health and wellbeing and can provide positive
reinforcement for co-operative learning. Young people could
develop school wide activities to raise self esteem, or
focus on co-operation skills and supportive learning.
- What about peer education?
This
does not have to be limited to academic areas of the curriculum.
Young people could begin by assessing their own skills and
offering their expertise in mathematics, sport or juggling
to other members of the school.
- Create surveys that find out the needs of a particular
group in the school
- One of the most important aspects of healthy schools
work is auditing the needs of the school. This project
takes this idea a step further - by asking young people
for their views on a whole range of issues. Once the
survey is complete, it can provide the opportunity for
effective cross - curricular work and the feedback on
the PSHCE programme or other aspects of the school.
- Make links with the arts!
Creativity
is the key!! Health education is not all doom and gloom
- the arts provide a medium for exploring a whole range
of issues through drama, music, dance, painting, photography
etc. Consider positive health messages for the environment,
emotional health and well being, drug education or sex and
relationships education.
- Celebrate different helpers in the school
Without
the support of its helpers, many schools would not be able
to function. From the crossing patrol person to the catering
service, this project provides an opportunity to find out
more about the person and to celebrate the part they play
in the life of the school. Inviting visitors into a class
is a project that requires careful planning and a great
deal of thought!!!
- Plan a special day
- Consider an issue such as friendship / relationships
in the school; or improving own learning and performance;
communication, and develop a school wide campaign to
raise awareness of the issues. Other topics may include
HIV/AIDS awareness, issues relating to drug education
or emotional health and well being. Always provide positive
messages that support positive behaviours.
- Create your own project
