Community Based Project Ideas

  • Plan a fundraising event for a community - based concern

Identify community - based services in your area and work with them to provide funds for something they might need. If the opportunity exists ensure that the fundraising activities have a health focus.

  • Work with local community groups to provide a special event

Some schools invite members of the community in for special events or celebrations.

  • Work with the community on a shared concern or issue

Explore your local area for sites that are run down or that would benefit from some community involvement. Work with the local council to improve the site and enlist the help of volunteers.

  • Survey the community

Find out what is of concern in your local area - or choose a topic and ask people what they think. It may be traffic during the school run or the lack of lockers in which to store cycle helmets.

  • Create your own project

Many of the projects undertaken through the Healthy Schools Scheme have enabled significant health gains to be made throughout the whole school community.

While the PSHCE audit will identify those health topics that need to be addressed as a priority, the school must be aware of the need to set targets that will actively engage people and create the conditions for behavioural and attitudinal change.

The school will need to gather evidence that work completed through the Scheme has enabled young people to take responsibility for their own health or has been useful in creating a climate of change.
