EXAMPLES
OF LOCAL SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT LINKED TO THE FOUR KEY
THEMES |
<<Back |
Healthy
Eating
Assisting schools
to set up healthy tuck shops, breakfast clubs, and drinking
water systems. Funding identified to allow one secondary
school to pilot a 'Fruit Smoothie Juice Bar' run by pupils,
to promote consumption of fruit and vegetables.
Physical
Activity
Many
schools have increased their provision of opportunities
for physical activity through the setting up of after school
clubs.
Personal,
Social and Health Education (PSHE) including sex and relationship
education and drug education (including alcohol, tabacco
and volatile substance abuse)
With
the support of Primary and Secondary school teachers and
involvement of the school health service a Scheme of Work
has been produced. This encourages best practice and suggests
new ways of working. Schools are supported to revise their
drug education policy in line with national and local recommendations.
This is done by close partnership working with the drug
advisors within the LEA. Pupils from an area of deprivation
in Barnsley have been to London to work alongside the National
Children's Bureau in writing the National Drug Strategy.
With
the assistance of the Healthy School team and School Health
Service a secondary and feeder primary school have developed
a peer education project in this area. Year ten pupils (14
year olds) have received training to enable them to work
with year six (eleven year olds) around puberty and transition
to secondary schools issues.
Emotional
Health & Well-being
Schools
are assisted to look at ways of encouraging expression of
pupil's views; this has been done in some cases by having
suggestion / comments boxes in class. These are then fed
into the school council system. This theme also looks at
staff health and well-being.
