Anti-Bullying
Resource
The Government Department
for Education and Skills produced "Don't Suffer In
Silence" - an anti-bullying pack for schools in December
2000. This is an excellent source of information to schools,
providing an update on the 1994 pack. The pack includes
useful references and a framework including:-
- Updated research,
- work with parents/carers,
- specific kinds of bullying: racist, sexist, homophobic,
children with disabilities, and a range of strategies
including peer support.
The
pack is available free of charge (1 per school free, then
£15 each) from:-
Department for Education and Skills Publications - 0845
602 2260.
All
schools must have a clear policy on anti - bullying. Governors
have a responsibility to ensure that a policy exists. Bullying
is a complex issue for the whole school community. It requires
a whole school approach to ensure sensitivity, consistency
and clear communication.
"Bullying
is a learned behaviour. Because it is learned it can be
unlearned" C.Herbert, 1995.
