The Process for Developing a School Sex and Relationship Education Policy

  1. Identify a representative group to develop the policy. You could use your healthy schools task group. e.g. pupils, parents, Governor, school staff, school nurse
  2. Send a copy of this guidance to members of the task group
  3. Identify other relevant policies
  4. Identify issues relevant to the schools and its population - e.g. faith, culture, gender mix, age range, teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection rates, risk taking behaviour, use of drugs and alcohol
  5. Draft the policy
  6. Consult with pupils, parents, staff and the school community - Utilise the representative to consult on the draft policy. Involve agencies who work in schools, e.g. the school nurse, Connexions, youth service
  7. Revise draft following feedback from consultation
  8. Send to Governors for approval
  9. Disseminate policy. Brief staff
  10. Monitor implementation of policy and review in 2 years
